ArtsMoney established itself as a farsighted and cogent guide to fiscal solvency for nonprofit arts organizations. Joan Jeffri’s approach is unique: she develops a philosophy for total fiscal management of the nonprofit, then describes how fundraising can be incorporated into that plan as one of many elements, rather than as the sole panacea for all of the organization’s financial woes.

Included in Jeffri’s formula are alternative organizational structures, tax exemption, earned income, grants and gifts, cooperative efforts to save money, the impact of new technology on income potential, and valuable information about unrelated business income and the 1986 Tax Reform Act. Her section on fundraising provides a step-by-step analysis of three grant proposals, each written for a different funding source by three very different funding source by three very different nonprofits. These proposals are accompanied by case histories and detailed commentary on the strategies used. This section has been especially helpful in resolving a difficult problem faced by many nonprofits: self-definition for a presumably indifferent public.

ArtsMoney has proved to be invaluable not just for arts organizations but for other nonprofits too, and as a text for courses in the burgeoning field of arts administration.
